How to set up reverse DNS (rDNS / PTR)

Reverse DNS maps your server's IP address back to a hostname. It's especially important for sending email — many mail servers reject mail from IPs without a matching rDNS record.

What you need

  • The IP address you want to set rDNS for.
  • A hostname that resolves to that IP (a matching forward A record).

How it's set

Reverse DNS for an IP is controlled by whoever owns the IP block — for your BPHOST server, that's us. The quickest way is to open a ticket with the IP and the hostname you'd like (for example server.yourdomain.co.za), and we'll set the PTR record for you.

Tip

Make sure the hostname also has a normal A record pointing back to the same IP — forward and reverse should match for best email deliverability.
