How to set up a catch-all email address

A catch-all — called Default Address in CHPanel — decides what happens to email sent to an address at your domain that does not exist, for example a mistyped infoo@yourdomain.co.za.

Your two choices

  • Reject — the default. Mail to a non-existent address bounces back to the sender, so they know it did not arrive.
  • Forward all — every message to an unknown address at the domain is delivered to one address you choose, so nothing is lost.

These are the only two options in CHPanel; there is no silent discard.

Set the default address

  1. Sign in at https://chpanel.bphost.biz with the email address on your hosting account and your CHPanel password (both are in your welcome email).
  2. Click the Email tab, then Default Address. The page lists each of your domains and whether it currently rejects or forwards.
  3. Find the domain and choose Forward all.
  4. Type the address that should catch everything — for example your info@ mailbox.
  5. Save. To switch it off again later, choose Reject for that domain.

Should you use one?

A catch-all is convenient, but spammers guess addresses, so the catching mailbox can fill up with junk quickly. Most customers are better off leaving Reject on and creating Forwarders only for the extra addresses they actually use. Not sure which suits you? Open a support ticket.
