What is a wildcard SSL certificate

A wildcard SSL certificate secures a domain and all of its subdomains with a single certificate — for example *.yourdomain.co.za covers blog., shop., mail. and any other subdomain.

When it's useful

  • You run several subdomains and want them all secured.
  • You add new subdomains often and don't want to issue a certificate each time.

Do you need to buy one?

For most BPHOST customers, no — our free AutoSSL automatically secures each subdomain as you create it, which covers the vast majority of needs. A paid wildcard is mainly useful for advanced setups or wildcard subdomains generated on the fly.

Want one?

If your setup genuinely needs a wildcard certificate, open a ticket and we'll help you choose and install the right one.
