How to speed up your WordPress site

A faster site keeps visitors happy and ranks better. Here are the highest-impact ways to speed up WordPress on BPHOST hosting — two in CHPanel, the rest inside WordPress.

Quick wins in CHPanel

  1. Run the newest PHP. Sign in at chpanel.bphost.biz with your hosting account email address and CHPanel password, open the PHP tab (Select PHP Version) and pick PHP 8.3 — or the newest version your plugins support — for the site. PHP 8 is much faster than 7.x, and the change applies within seconds.
  2. Turn on compression. On the Home page, under Software, open Optimize Website and switch on gzip so pages, scripts and stylesheets download smaller.

Inside WordPress

  1. Use a caching plugin such as WP Super Cache or W3 Total Cache, so pages are served ready-made instead of being built on every visit.
  2. Right-size your images. Upload photos at the size they will be shown (a 4,000-pixel photo in an 800-pixel column is wasted bandwidth) and compress them; an image-optimisation plugin can do this automatically.
  3. Use a light theme and delete plugins you do not use.
  4. Keep WordPress, themes and plugins updated — newer versions are usually faster.

Going further

  • Put a CDN such as Cloudflare in front of the site to serve content closer to your visitors.
  • Limit heavy page builders and large sliders.
  • Clean out post revisions and spam comments now and then.
